The Sims 1 Re-Release: A Nostalgic Letdown

Game of the month: February. When I heard The Sims 1 was being re-released, I was ready to dive back into that chaotic, low-poly world of absurdity and charm. But then… reality hit.

No Mac support. No proper high-resolution options. How?

How do you take such a golden opportunity—the chance to revive one of the most iconic games ever—and do so little with it? In 2024, adding high-res and Mac compatibility shouldn’t be rocket science. Instead, they locked it to a single platform, leaving so many longtime fans (including me) out in the cold.

Thankfully, I can still play The Sims 1 Complete Collection on my old Windows machine, which, let’s be real, I mostly keep just for this game (and for posting my chaotic Sims 1 creations on @conansims, obviously).

But while that re-release was a letdown, I did rediscover The Sims 2: Super Collection on the App Store.   I bought it years ago, and to my surprise, it runs like a dream on my M1 Pro Mac. Smooth gameplay, solid graphics, and no existential crises over frozen loading screens.  The needs system is surprisingly manageable, aspirations give a real sense of progression, and let’s not forget—these Sims actually wear decent clothes, unlike The Sims 3, which, despite being a classic, still freezes like it’s allergic to running properly.

Now, let’s talk about The Sims 4. For years, I treated it like my mortal enemy, but after the news that The Sims 5 isn’t happening anytime soon, I finally gave it another chance.  Playing it on my boyfriend’s M3 Mac was an unexpectedly pleasant experience—smooth, detailed, and, with the right expansion packs, genuinely fun. And let’s be honest, The Sims 4 isn’t a game—it’s an ecosystem of expansion packs, game packs, stuff packs, and kits, each adding something to the experience. I’m officially in.  I’ll probably be investing in this for the next few years, and honestly? I’m okay with that.

At the end of the day, The Sims is the game of my life. Even with all its quirks, disappointments, and countless hours lost to build mode, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
